Protect the Environment While You Shop

Shopping Trolley Save the Earth

Individuals, who would like to make more a difference in the protection of the environment, can do so with some relatively easy strategies. The best areas to focus on are your everyday activities that can be modified to better conserve energy and water, or reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Your efforts to protect the environment do not have to be limited to the confines of your home and car. Everyday activities such as shopping can be made much more environmentally friendly using the simple techniques included in this article.

Here are some ways that you can minimize your next shopping trip’s impact:

Purchase high quality goods. Over the past decade, the market has been flooded with lower quality, lower-cost goods that allow people to buy more and spend less. Although paying less for the things we need is not necessarily a bad thing, it can become a problem if the purchased items are of a low quality.

Often low quality items do not last as long as they need to, forcing you to replace them with relative frequency. Not only does this end up costing you more money in the long run, it also becomes an environmental issue as landfills are piled with the discarded and broken items.

Additionally, manufacturing goods takes energy and natural resources. That is why purchasing higher quality items, which will be replaced less frequently, will minimize the impact that your shopping has on the environment.

Only buy post-consumer recycled paper products. Did you know that the paper industry is one of the largest contributors to global warming emissions? You can help limit their impact by purchasing post consumer recycled products, such as paper, toilet paper, and tissue. By making the switch, you will be reducing the number of trees cut down and alleviating some of the environmental damage created.

For those concerned about quality, there is no need to worry. Advancements have ensured that post consumer recycled paper products are often indistinguishable from their non-recycled counterparts in terms of quality and comfort.

Look for natural materials and environmentally safe manufacturing practices. When ever possible, purchase natural and organic items; for example, many clothing lines now carry organic cotton items which have the added benefit of being less likely to irritate your skin.

BYOB – Bring Your Own Bag. Nothing is free in this world, not even that free bag that the cashier packs your purchase in. Plastic bags carry a heavy cost for the environment and are often discarded after their initial job is done.

If you are already thinking green, you may recycle these bags for other purposes, or bring them back to the store with you the next time you return. However, the fact remains that these bags are ultimately disposable. A better option is to purchase reusable shopping bags made from organic or recycled materials.

The good news is that reusable shopping bags are becoming a fast-growing trend that has been picked up by celebrities and fad-setters around the world. Now shoppers have a wide selection of reusable shopping bags to choose from – with something to suit everyone’s taste.
