A Layman’s Guide to Boiler Efficiency
Published: Tuesday, February 17th, 2009
The more efficient your boiler is the less energy it will use, which will result in you saving money on your gas bills. Is it possible to increase the efficiency of your boiler? It sure is, here are the top five ways to make your boiler more energy efficient.
1. Replace it with a new SEDBUK ‘A’ rated boiler! This is not something you can do immediately and it can be expensive but many new combi boilers have an efficiency rating of over 95%. By investing in a new boiler you could recoup your costs within a few years by paying less on your gas bills.
2. Schedule a service yearly. Some companies, such as British Gas, have monthly plans protecting your boiler from breaking down. Often the service plan will provide an annual service for free. A service will check the parts of your boiler and makes sure it is working at an optimum level.
3. Arrange a system power flush. Power flushing is a good way to remove the debris and limescale from your radiators and pipe work, this will allow hot water to flow freely around the system to warm the house better. The more easily the water moves, the more effective it is at heating the system and your boiler has less work to do. Simply, you get the same level of heating but use a lot less energy. Unfortunately power flushing can be expensive but it does increase your boiler’s efficiency quite dramatically and it will save you money in the long run – particularly if you have an older boiler and heating system.
4. Fit a magnetic filter and a limescale filter to your heating system. Magnetic filters are for removing iron oxide from the system which can improve your boiler’s efficiency and lower your energy usage. If you add a limescale filter you can also improve the quality of the water entering the system and remove the majority of the limescale before it reaches the boiler and starts to effect performance. Both a magentic and limescale filter are relatively cheap and can increase your boiler’s efficiency by a considerable amount.
5. Thermostatic radiator valves. Fitting these valves to all suitable radiators will allow you to vary the radiator temperature in each of the rooms in your house. This allows you to individually control the raditaors turning those you don’t use down and vice versa. By turning hardly used radiators down you use less energy and increase your boiler efficiency – an easy way to save money.
There are many ways to increase your boiler’s efficiency to save money. If you implement all the things we have suggested here then you would have a clean, energy efficient heating system, and it wouldn’t take too long to recover your investment.
